It doesn’t matter if you are the CEO, working on the front line or in your own business. The start of a year represents ‘new and different’ for many of us. It brings hope. Hope for change and improvement, chance and opportunities, growth and profit. Hope however will not give you the success you’re looking for in 2018, 2019 or even 2020, but this idea might.
Hope ‘a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen’. Without a doubt, we need hope to believe things will work out for the better, however, hope on its own is kind of static, coming from nowhere and relying on chance, rather than something solid like an action, to make things happen.
So is it action rather than hope that we need for success? Not exactly.
A few months ago I wrote about one of my favourite lessons from the book The Slight Edge, about the secret of time for massive success. In short, when we understand that time is on our side, whatever it is we want to achieve, becomes possible. We just have to start and keep moving. So yes, action is important, but there is another critical factor to success!
What to Become an Expert? Every day read 10 pages of a good book, or watch a youtube demonstration or ask an expert about the area you want to become an expert in.
Want to lose weight or get fit? Then take a walk for 15 minutes every day.
Go on a holiday? Put something in a money tin every day. $1.00 or $100. You’ll be surprised how quickly a small fortune can build. If you can’t put even 5c in on one day, do something else toward your goal like not buy a coffee or take your lunch to work instead of buying it and then save that money.
Improve relationships at work Smile, say thank you, acknowledge achievements, ask what they are grateful for? Share your genuine self. Do it every day. Make it a habit.
Become a rock star If you have dreams of playing an instrument, then practice that instrument of choice for 20 minutes – every day (or even 2 minutes).
Notice how the actions to achieve these big goals like ‘Become a Rock Star’ are small and bite-sized? And notice the everyday bit? That’s because it is consistency that is the key to success. Do something every day toward a goal. Do even the boring little things that are easy to do and just as easy not to do. Do them consistently for success.
Time is on your side and spending even the smallest time on your goals is better than spending no time at all!
Imagine if we approached every day with the same earnest enthusiasm, the same hope we bring to a new year? And then imagine if we resolved every day to be better versions of ourselves then applied The Slight Edge secret of time (consistent repeated daily actions + time) for success?
That’s the happy new year I hope for.
